Common Privacy Fence Design Upgrades
Design Your Own Unique Privacy Style
Lumber Upgrade - While our basic privacy fence lumber is our MCQ™ pressure treated pine about 1/3 of our wood fencing customers upgrade to western red cedar. Other less common lumber upgrades include oak, cypress and bamboo.

Height - Our standard wood privacy fences are built in either 6 or 8 foot heights. Other heights are available upon request.

Seal & or Stain - While all lumbers that we use when constructing fences are either chemically treated or naturally resistant to rot and decay, we strongly suggest that your fencing be water sealed to extend the life and natural beauty of the wood. Sealing a fence should be done a few months after installation, when the lumber has dried well. Staining wooden fencing is another popular option that will allow your fence to be almost any color desired. By contacting one of our many project managers, the can provide you with pricing and different stain and seal options.

Board-on-Board - Building a board on board fence consists of spacing pickets out as in building a semi-privacy fence, but then coming back and putting pickets over each gap, in an overlapping fashion. The major advantage of this design upgrade is that it will allow the fencing pickets to shrink or expand, without creating gaps.

Board & Batten - A board & batten fence consists of building a solid privacy fence and then placing a strips of lumber (the batten) over the each place that the pickets come together. Advantages of this include the esthetic appeal and the allowing of fencing pickets to shrink or expand, without creating gaps.

Shadow Box/Good Neighbor- A shadow box fence is also known as good neighbor fencing, as it looks the same on both sides. This style of fence is built by spacing pickets out like on a semi-privacy fence, but doing it on both sides of the rails and alternating their location. When perpendicular to the fence and looking straight at it, it will look solid and you will not be able to see through. When looking down the fence line, there will be some visibility to the other side of the fence. Major advantages of this design upgrade are the esthetics created by shadows cast by the pickets, that it looks the same on both sides and that it allows for wind to pass though and limited visibility.

Semi-Privacy - A semi-privacy fence is built by spacing out the fence pickets and creating open gaps in between them. Because we custom build all of our privacy fences, the spacing between pickets can be from 2" to as large as you like. The advantages of this design upgrade is the visibility it provides and that it allows wind to pass though.

Horizontal Board - A horizontal board fence is one that has horizontal pickets rather than vertical. These fences are considered more of a modern design, over the more traditional vertical board fences. As is with all of your fences, our horizontal board privacy fences are fully customizable and
Scalloped - A scalloped privacy fence has a concave (downward) arch, also known as a saddle. Scallop trim is an additional option to go along with a scalloped fence. The depth of the scallop can easily be adjusted from light to heavy.
Arched - A regular arched privacy fence has a convex (upward) arch. Arch trim is an addition option to go along with an arched fence. The height of the arch can easily be adjusted from light to heavy.
Exposed Posts/Inset Pickets - A fence with exposed posts simply has the pickets inset between the posts, rather than across the face of the posts. This will allow the fence posts to be visible when facing the front of the fence. See a fence without exposed posts.
Fascia Boards - A "fascia" is simply a board that is placed horizontally on the face of the fence. These are used to frame the front of the fence and add esthetic appeal. Here is a fence with two fascia boards per section. We use 1x4's, 2x4's, 1x6's and 2x6's for fascia boards
Top Boards - A top board is simply a board that lays flat on the top of each privacy fence section. Most commonly, we use 1x4's, 2x4's, 1x6's and 2x6's for top boards. Here is a fence with a top board.
Lattice Top - The possibilities for a lattice topped fence, are endless. From vertical and horizontal lattice, to traditional diagonal and custom designs, we can design and build any and all styles of lattice for your fencing.
Cut Post Tops - Post tops can be cut any way our customers desire, but here are a few common ones include; light dado, dual dado, french gothic and pointed .
Post Caps - Our post cap options are close to endless. From copper and aluminum to solar lighted and stained glass. Check out our different post cap options! When you spot one or multiple post cap options you are interested in, send us over the webpage or model number for them be added to your estimate and fence.

Wood Privacy Fence Ideas
When looking for unique wood privacy fence ideas, we have a few suggestions. First, start by checking out the privacy fence designs we have provide above, and see if there is any specific style or feature that you like. Keep in mind that we encourage our customers to mix and match different upgrades, to come up with a unique design. With over ten common upgrades, there are literally thousands of unique designs that are possible. Next, we suggest checking out magazines for up to date design ideas. Most books on fencing will only have standard and outdated fence ideas, so home and garden design magazines are always great. Moving along, a google, yahoo or bing image search is another great way to find different fence ideas. If you find a fence you like, just send us an image or link to a page with an image, and it will be our pleasure to provide our per foot price for supply and installation of that fence.
Our Wood Privacy Fence Lumber
Most of the privacy fences we are requested to build are with pressure treated pine followed by western red cedar. Other special ordered lumbers include oak, cypress and bamboo. Many of our fences incorporate both cedar and pine, due to different advantages provided by each lumber. Most commonly this is done by using pressure treated pine posts when building a cedar fence. The reason being is the affordability of pressure treated pine posts over the cedar, and because setting cedar posts in concrete can cause water to pool and rot the base of the post. Three solutions are to coat the base of the post with a resin based moisture barrier, to use metal sleeves over the base of the posts, or to water seal and wrap them with a thick tape such as Tyvek Straight Flash™ or Vycor™. This should be done up to about 1" above the top of the concrete.
Pine
Our MCQ™ pine lumber boasts a more nature look than other pressure treated lumbers. The treatment process is certified as an Environmentally Preferable Product by the Scientific Certification System. The lumber comes with a lifetime residential and agricultural limited warranty against structural damage caused by termites and fungal decay. The pine fence pickets come with a limited 15 year warranty See warranty for specific provisions. Our pine lumber uses a copper-based preservative with a co-biocide and is building code compliant ICC-ES Reports, ESR-1980, ESR-2240. We suggest water sealing your pine fence about 3 months after installation. We do offer sealing and staining as an additional service.
Cedar
Our western red cedar lumber provides natural beauty and durability that lends itself well to any backyard project. It has a natural resistance to rot and decay and comes with a limited 20 year manufactures warranty. Cedar lumber varies in color from a red, golden brown, light blond and dark chocolate. A major advantage of cedar over pine, is the dimensional stability, meaning it is less likely to warp or change shape. While the application of water sealant is not necessary, it will extend the life and original beauty of the wood. We do offer sealing and staining as an additional service.
Our Wood Privacy Fence Installation
Our wood privacy fences are installed by our professional installation experts that have years of fencing and craftsmanship experience, are fully insured and carry workers compensation and are full time employees of our company. Privacy fence installation is a craft that we take very seriously. Privacy fences should flow smoothly with the slope of your land, lumber cuts should be as tight as possible, all posts and boards should be consistently vertical, horizontal or diagonal depending on the design, posts should be accurately set in high-strength concrete, fence lines should be perfectly straight, nail tips should not be exposed, wood privacy fence gates should be properly engineered, hung and latched, fencing should conform to local or pool fence standards and all dirt and construction debris should be properly removed from the work site. Doing this takes skilled professionals with years of experience. Our two main installation leaders have over 10-years of experience in building privacy fences that have ended up in books, on television shows, blog posts and magazines. They are recognized as some of the best fence installers in our industry and are ready to do a perfect job on your upcoming fence project. To back our industry leading craftsmen and their work, we are pleased to provide a lifetime installation warranty on all fences that we install!
