Atlanta Pool Codes & Regulations (Fulton County):
Before installing, filling, and/or operating a pool in Fulton County, a barrier around the pool area must be approved and built. Here's some of what you need to know about the Fulton County Pool Code regarding your pool area’s barrier. Also refer to the BOCA Nation Pool Fence Code here.
Pool barrier. An adequate barrier should surround the perimeter of every pool.
Construction. Any type of barrier may be used—fence, wall, or building—so long as unpermitted entrance to the pool area is deterred and barred and the following construction standards are adhered to:
- -The purpose of constructing these boundaries should be to regulate each person’s entry, prevent unintended user entry, inhibit animals and unsupervised children entrance into the secured pool area
- -The height of the barrier must be at least sixty inches from the exterior grade
- -Have nothing within three feet of the boundary that could be used to climb
- -Have at least two elements in contact with the boundary separated by at least two feet—measured from the tops of the elements—of unscalable vertical space with no dips or extensions to allow the ability to climb
- -Have no opening large enough for a sphere object four inches in diameter can go through it—between the barrier and anywhere else from top to bottom
- -Installation should be according to code, submitted and approved construction plan, and, if included, the manufacturer’s instructions
- -Within the barrier’s material have no elements used for purely decoration
- -The diamond shape opening in chain link material fencing cannot be larger than 1 ¼ inch
Entrance. The shallow end of the pool should be where the entrance is located. There must be a gate, which closes automatically using a positive-latching mechanism and no shorter than 45 inches directly above the surface where it is installed.
Closure. Whenever the pool is closed a pool cover is necessary, but not alone. All entries to the pool must be closed and inhibited to secure the area.
Construction. Before constructing the barrier the department must be contacted and sent all plans including the composition, placement, dimensions, elevations, and any other data for approval. After approval, the boundary must be completely built before filling the pool.
